01 Which knots cover most jobs, and what does each one hold?
Knots fall into a few families, and each family covers a set of jobs. Bends join two ropes. Hitches tie a rope to an object. Loops make a fixed eye. Stoppers bulk a rope end. Braids are not knots at all: they are woven structures that spread load along the whole length. Cord construction and strength ratings decide what a tie, a sling or a lashing can carry, and they matter more than the knot name on the packet.
A small kit covers nearly everything. Learn one from each family and you can improvise the rest.
The bowline makes a fixed loop that will not slip under load and unties after heavy strain. It holds a line to a ring, a tarp corner or a person. The figure eight on a bight does the same job with a larger, rounder loop and is easier to inspect. Use it where a bowline might shake loose.
The clove hitch ties a rope to a post or rail fast, and it is the standard start for lashings. It can slip if the load changes direction, so back it up or use two. The round turn and two half hitches holds far better under steady pull and is the honest choice for a guy line or a boat painter.
The sheet bend joins two ropes of different size. The double sheet bend adds a second turn and holds better when the ropes are stiff or wet. The alpine butterfly makes a loop in the middle of a rope and takes load from either side, which suits a mid-line anchor or isolating a damaged section.
Stoppers stop a rope running through a hole. The figure eight knot is the common one. The overhand is smaller and jams harder, which is fine for a temporary whipping but poor where you need to untie later.
For anything decorative or load bearing in cord, the same families apply. A diamond lanyard knot is a stopper and a decorative terminal. A cobra knot is a flat weave, not a knot in the rope sense, and it is a structure rather than a tie. A Prusik is a friction hitch: it grips a host rope when loaded and slides when slack. A three strand braid is a spliceable structure used for leads and lanyards. 02 How do you braid a lanyard, a key fob or a dog lead step by step?
Braiding is repetition. Once the first three passes are right, the rest is rhythm.
A lanyard starts with a loop. Cut two lengths of cord, roughly four times the finished length, and melt the ends. Find the midpoint of each and cross them so you have a small loop at the top. Pass the right strand over the left, then under, then over again to form a square knot at the top. Tighten it flat. Now work down: take the left strand over the centre, the right strand over that, then under the centre and up through the loop on the left. Pull both ends evenly. That is one cobra stitch. Repeat until the braid is the length you want, then melt the last ends into the body of the braid and trim flush.
A key fob is the same stitch with fewer strands. Use one length folded in half, so you have two working ends and a loop. Work cobra stitch down a short run, about five to seven centimetres, then thread the loop through a split ring before you start. Finish by melting the tails into the back. A square knot fob is simpler still: two strands, four passes, then a diamond knot to cap it.
A dog lead needs a handle and a clip. Braid a length of about one and a half metres, allowing for the handle loop at one end and the clip at the other. Fold the top back on itself to form the handle and whip it with a separate short cord, or braid the handle in as you go by leaving a gap in the centre strands. At the clip end, pass the cord through the eye of the clip, fold it back and braid over the doubled section for three or four passes. Melt and bury the ends. A wide, flat braid sits better in the hand than a round one, and a four strand round braid is stronger for the same bulk.
For a sling or a longe, braid a flat strap and splice the ends rather than knotting them. A splice keeps most of the cord's strength. A knot in the same place can cut it by half.
03 What do cord types, construction and strength ratings actually promise?
Cord is sold by type, and the type tells you the construction. Type I is the lightest, around two millimetres, with a single inner strand. Type II is about three millimetres. Type III is the common four millimetre cord with seven inner strands. Type IV is thicker again, around five to six millimetres, with more strands and a higher rating. The numbers are a size and construction class, not a guarantee of any particular breaking strength.
Construction matters more than diameter. A kernmantle cord has a woven sheath over straight or twisted core strands. The sheath takes abrasion and the core takes load. A solid braid has no separate core, so the whole cord shares the load and it resists twisting better, but it stretches more. A hollow braid can be spliced easily and is common in cheap utility cord, but it flattens under a knot and loses strength at tight bends.
Strength ratings are usually given as a minimum breaking strength, tested on a straight pull. That figure is not a safe working load. A knot, a splice, a bend radius, UV exposure, abrasion, age and water all reduce it. A bowline in four millimetre cord might test at half the straight pull figure. A tight bend around a thin carabiner can cost more. For anything holding a person, use a rated sling or webbing with a known standard, not craft cord, and never rely on a decorative braid for life support.
For camping and hiking, the honest approach is to oversize. A guy line that only just holds in still air will fail in a gust. A lashing that only just holds a static load will work loose when the load shifts. Choose cord by the job: light cord for whipping and fobs, four millimetre for lanyards and guy lines, thicker flat braid for leads and straps. Check the sheath for cuts after every trip, and retire any cord that has been shock loaded.
04 How do you choose between a knot and a splice?
Use a knot when you need to untie, adjust or join different sizes. Use a splice when the connection is permanent and you want maximum strength. A splice takes longer and needs the right cord construction, but it keeps more of the cord's rating and it will not shake loose. For a lead, a sling or a longe, splice the ends and knot nothing. For a tarp, a guy line or a temporary lashing, a hitch and a couple of half hitches are faster and easier to undo in the rain.
05 What breaks first in a loaded cord?
The knot, the bend or the sheath. A knot concentrates stress at the entry and exit points, so the cord fails there first. A tight bend around a small radius does the same. A cut or worn sheath exposes the core to abrasion and UV, and the core then fails strand by strand. Inspect the sheath, avoid sharp edges, and keep bends as wide as you can. If a cord has held a shock load, retire it even if it looks sound.
06 What is the minimum kit worth learning?
Five knots and one braid. Bowline, figure eight on a bight, clove hitch, round turn and two half hitches, and a double sheet bend. Add a cobra braid for flat straps and lanyards. That set covers tying off, joining, looping, anchoring and making a handle. Everything else is a variation, and practice matters more than the number of knots you can name.
A short stay in the hills is decided long before you leave the house.
